Baywatch 2011

Post by pdudley42 »

No, I don't care what Hasselhoff is up to these days. Our beloved Mallett's Bay on the other hand, I think about every day. Monday 12/20, I walked out on the ice a little from the boat launch; solid but choppy, as it always is when it first forms by land.
This thread should be used to update the ice condition and depth. For those who live in the area, please respond when you start seeing snowmobile tracks or fishermen on the ice. That is when we start drilling!!!!!!!
AMEC reported 6 inches on one of their lakes (Caroga I think). It happens fast. On a cold windy night it is possible to grow 2 inches of ice.

I drove by Lake Iroquois on my way home form the club meeting. There were human and dog tracks. As soon as I get a chance, I'll go over and drill a hole or 6.

I live in mallets bay and drive by the lake at least twice a day, and some times 4 times a day. I have been keeping a close eye on it.

What's the snow situation in the Bay? Not much accumulation and high wind seemed to be the themes of this storm. I love the windy nature of Mbay...it just blows itself clean.

Bad news. I stopped by Mbay today and drilled a few holes. A consistent 5.5 inches is all we've got. I walked out to where to bay opens up from the boat launch. On the plus side, the ice was very clear and strong looking (as we've come the expect from Mbay).
Saddened by this discovery, I stopped by Iroquois on the way home. About 6.5 inches on that lake, but it was white ice (not as strong).
At this point, I think Iroquois is out and we're just waiting for the bay to thicken up...a lot. It amazes me how fast this happens, we could still be (don't call it) racing by February 1.
