I'd like to introduce the club to Baab. He's a 93 Saab 9000 CS Turbo.
Not that I really need another project, but how can you say no to a free car. While Baab may never be the perfect racer, he should at least be fun for a little while.
I thinking he might be a good candidate for a rallyx beater, or maybe even a budget hillclimber. He has an auto transmission, so his motorsports career isn't expected to be glorious(however, I do know this tranny only has 10k on it)...
Budget will be very minimal.
At this moment it looks like he needs an oil change, a new battery, and brake rotors on all four corners. Otherwise he seems like he's in fairly good shape. He even has a new set of tires on him. All lights seem to work.
Passenger front window, doesn't like to stay on track, and the climate control seems to be stuck on heat.
In all nothing to complain about for a free beater.

Re: Project Baab
Is that the version with the 2.3 Turbo? I recall something like 200hp and 230 lbs-ft of torque or something like that. Made for quite the highway cruiser/passer.

Re: Project Baab
yep, 2.3 turbo.
Appears to have been a pretty nice car when it was new.

Actually the autos on the 9000's are pretty tough. 5 speeds swaps aren't too difficult either...I know a guy in Hinesburg who has done it on his personal 9000. He has a plethora of parts/parts cars.
I have all the necessary tools to hack your ECU and give you a lot more boost.
9000's are great, fast, safe, and comfortable.
Nice find!

I may take you up on the hackage.8valvegrowl wrote:Actually the autos on the 9000's are pretty tough. 5 speeds swaps aren't too difficult either...I know a guy in Hinesburg who has done it on his personal 9000. He has a plethora of parts/parts cars.

I took it off the trailer today. Brakes are totally gone and I didn't realize it. Depressed the brakes, put it in reverse to come off the trailer...and off I went, brakes no workie. Thankfully the ebrake worked. Otherwise the plow on my truck was going to stop my progress.
I put a half way decent battery in it, and the alternator seems to charge well enough. The old battery didn't even hold a charge for 12 hours.
I did see the conversion from auto to manual. It's intriguing. I'll have to see how it does after I get the brakes sorted, before I even think of trying that.
Couple other little issues I must figure out. Heat is always on even when the climate control is on(or off if I turn it off). Low speed on the radiator fan, doesn't seem to work, but high speed does.
Only had about an hour to work on it.....Andrew wasn't interested in giving me more time.

Heh heh, yeah...as they say Something Almost Always Broken.
The fan sounds like the resistor pack is gone. As for the climate control...sounds like the blend door that mixes the air is stuck in one position. I have a similar problem on my 9-5, but it blows cold air (really fun on long winter trips...let me tell you).
www.eeuroparts.com will become your new best friend. Big catalog of factory parts, wholesale prices, and free fast shipping on orders more than $59 (Ground shipping usually gets here in a day or two as they are based in CT).
I have a power bleeder that fits Saab master cylinders if you are interested....

Oh, and the front window issue is probably due to a cracked roller....I've replaced those before...easy and cheap fix.

Re: Project Baab
my biggest concern is the brakes. Pedal goes to the floor, yet the fluid appears full in the resovoir. That tells me the master may be fubar'd. Looking around on the net, rebuild kits don't seem to exist for this year with ABS and new masters seem rather expensive($600+).
Maybe it's premature, as I haven't removed the wheels. However, I'd think if the brakes were hung up, I'd have more resistance on the pedal. With no resitance, it would mean either a leak(but the fluid is full) or the master is busted.
If I need a $600 master....that means the car is ready for the junkyard.
I'm doing a bit of research on the saab forums, and learning stuff. Sounds like some of the ABS systems on the 9000's can be complicated.
