RA1's/R888's or not, that is the question.

spec miata cast off are easy/cheap enough, but at the size 205/50 15.
I have 15x7 inch rims. Though I'd have to go back to 2.5rs sized brakes from the wrx size I currently have.
I'd go from a 24.7 inch(225/50 r16) rolling diameter to 23 inches. They'd also be 5 lbs per tire lighter. My 15 inch rims weigh about the same as my 16's.

Gearing and unsprung weight would benefit.
Can get 4 used shipped to my door for cheap, with 50% tread life remaining.

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself.

I would say stick with the 16s so you can use the WRX brakes, but go with the lowest profile tire you can that still fit on the car. Still lower unsprung weight and gearing benefits.

This may or may not help, but I now have NT01s for the RSX. They are cheaper than the R888s but are the same rubber compound, just different tread pattern. You mentioned that you can get used ones, but as soon as you have sticky tires, you'll want them again. In order to keep up the rate of buying tires to support your habbit, you may want to look at what options there are after the used set is gone.

205/50 is the spec miata size. So I'm fairly convinced their would be a decent flow of used ones out there.
I'll look into the nitto's though.

Brake caliper stays the same, just the pad carrier gets larger to accomodate the wrx sized rotors, which are less than an inch bigger.

box from speedway just arrived, with sfi roll bar padding, 5 point harnesses, mounting hardware and sfi driving gloves. Meant to order small gloves, but got large(my mistake), yet they still fit....glad I didn't order the small. I'm guessing medium probably would have been just right.
Cage should be done this week...hoping for thursday.

Cage builder had questions about gussets yesterday. Hoping that means he's nearly done. Going to work on it tomorrow, hopefully it's at a point where I can start to put the dash back in.

Slow but steady progress. Worked on the car yesterday. Tough to get work done in between customer cars/questions.
Main hoop is in and tacked in place. Drivers side A-pillar bar is in and tacked in place.
Passenger side A pillar is in place, but we aren't happy with it, so it will get re-done.
Main hoop to rear strut is done on the driver side, plus another support from the main hoop on the drivers side is done(tacked in place). Bar across the top of the windshield is cut but is waiting for the passenger side a pillar bar to be completed. Passenger side support to the main hoop is also done and tacked in place.
Hoping to work on it saturday for a full day while the shop is closed. We get a lot done quickly, but it is tough to get that un-interupted time in.
I think if we get full day in saturday the cage SHOULD be done.

More work yesterday. From the main hoop back is all cut, fitted and at least tacked in place. Ran out of 1.75 x 095 DOM, so the rest will have to wait. Some of it was completed welded. Have the door bars cut but not bent or fitted. They were suppose to be working on it today without me. I imagine he is just going to be doing the finish welding, rather than any bending.
Without another long piece of 1.75 DOM, we can't re-do the passenger side A pillar bar, and therefore can't do the passenger side door bars, the bar across the top of the windshield or the V along the roof. Overall, very good progress, wish I had brought the camera.
Made my first weld, just tacking one bar into place. This way I can say I did some of the welding. , thank god nobody will ever see that abomination, and the rest of the weld at that connection will be done by someone who knows what they are doing.
