They posted the segment on their web site.
Hopefully some folks will see it: http://www.grid1.tv/videos/featured/ice-racing

Re: MOBIL 1 THE GRID
Thanks for that link! That was very cool. I might actually have to spring for separate wheels and some unstudded tires so I can try to join the fun next winter.jcollins914 wrote:They posted the segment on their web site.

I still don't understand why street studded tires aren't allowed. That's what has kept me from AMEC events. I don't want to buy another set of winter tires ($700 minimum) just for that.

Re: MOBIL 1 THE GRID
Dave, the answer is that it was too hard to police. It turned out that only tire people could be competitive...fresh studs pull out more and need to be replaced more. I know what you're thinking, "who gives a (Chrysler), I just wanna race and street studs are the way to do it". As many members will attest, they like unstudded racing more. They also say that virgin unstudded tires have comparable (or better) traction to street-driven studded tires. I cannot confirm or disconfirm this. I would be satisfied to be able to run them in the "Open" class, which has no scoring.
Anyway, it seems the vast majority of their board is made up of the Menard-class racers, and the street-legal guys are looked on as kind of Busch-league.

Re: MOBIL 1 THE GRID
I recognize the new breed of unstudded tires offer similar performance but they wear so fast from the soft compounds they use unless you go all the way with Nokians, which are $200 tires for my car. I ran Blizzack Revo RE01's and got maybe 15k miles out of a set. I can run a harder compound studded winter tire and get more miles for my money with similar grip. 10k miles on my current set and I still have all the studs despite abusing them badly just to see if I COULD dislodge a stud.
I don't care about scoring I just want to go out and race and have a big donkey smile on my face. That's why I like SCCV ITT events, more focused on fun. I guess if I want to play I need to get more serious, as backwards as that sounds.
Or just buy a Miata and make some bolt tires...
