it's good for an auto-x, it needs to be at least a M2000 or SA2000 rating

That's about the most basic you could get away with. I'd suggest spending a bit more if you can and getting an sa2010 helmet. That will give you the most long term use and flexibility, or if you just want a short term solution, find a used helmet.

I agree with gtivr4, if you are going to buy a new helmet go for the sa2010.

SCCV only requires the m/sa2000's so you would be covered for our events, and you should be able to find a very cheap used one in that year range even possibly within our club since there are several members who needed to upgrade based on the other events they do. It is important to recognize that the 2000 range helmet is just what our club requires, you should consider that other clubs, events you may want to try might require the m/sa 2005 to run at that event and since helmets are reissued every 5 years the m/sa 2005 are only guaranteed to be good for 5 years at the "other clubs/events"

... except if you're shopping (like I am) you'll find plenty of discounts on 2005 (and even 2000) -certified helmets; companies are clearancing them as 2010's are coming in. I've found some pretty cool helmets (M2005) for less than $75 shipped. A plain 'cheap' SA2010 starts at ~$150. There's a school of thought that a better brand is a better helmet, and it's your head, but a certified helmet meets the standards and there's no rating for exceeding the standards, so...

Speaking of shopping on the internet, beware: as I shopped I kept another tab opened w/ the Snell Memorial Foundation website's helmet look-up list [http://www.smf.org/cert]- I found a couple advertised that claim Snell certification that, well, lie. (You will also run into some that don't initially show up because they are listed under a parent company's name...)

For reference, a trip around the old "www" finds the following certification minimums for area organizations for "Solo" or "HPDE" events:
BMWCCA minimums are M2005/SA2005 or newer
COMSSC is M2005/SA2005 or newer "for classes SS, ST, and SP"
(NJ Motorsports Park requires full-face w/ shield)
SCCNH is "SA, M, or K within the past 15 years or (current) FIA Standard 8860"
CMC is "current (2010) and two previous (2005 and 2000) remain legal until the 2015 ratings come out"
SCCA Solo is "...the latest or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, SA2000, M2010, M2005, M2000, K2010, K2005, K98), SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A or British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are acceptable."
New England Hillclimb Association (NEHA) is the only one (I can find) in the Northeast near-ish us that requires SA only(current or one previous), unless you're planning organized/serious rally or "high-end" racing...

is 2005 or newer which is why so many of our club members have upgraded this year.

Thank you to all the replied. I am currently working in Utah on a two week assignment and have lost forum contact :-). Glad I did not pull the trigger on that helmet.
